John Pahlas: Forging Metal Art & Creative Freedom | Sculptor Spotlight (2026)

John Pahlas, a steel sculptor, has forged a unique artistic path through metal, drawing from his childhood experiences and a rich, hands-on education in blacksmithing, forging, and welding. His parents' business, Metalworks, provided him with a foundation in metalworking, and he honed his skills before earning a BFA from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh. Today, he works at Center Ground Studios in Mount Horeb, which he co-owns with his partner, Heidi Clayton, a potter. Pahlas' work is characterized by a sense of creative freedom and playfulness, which he strives to maintain despite the pressures of the art world. He finds inspiration in the surreal and biomechanical art of H.R. Giger, and his work often reflects a tug-of-war between creating something for himself and putting a price tag on it. Pahlas' journey has been marked by negative emotions and anxieties, but he has recently found a way to disengage with the boundaries of his adult mind and return to a playful state of wonder. His work, which includes sculptures for the Duluth Trading Co. headquarters and the Madison Children's Museum, is a testament to his unique artistic vision and his ability to find joy in the creative process.
