As the sun beats down on London, one might assume that the city's ice cream sellers are basking in the glory of a booming business. However, for Gus Bodur, the iconic 'Ice Cream Man' of north-west London, known affectionately as Gussy, the heatwave presents a unique set of challenges.
In an exclusive interview with BBC London, Gus, a seasoned ice cream vendor with nearly 50 years of experience, revealed the struggles that come with the scorching temperatures. The heatwave, he explained, puts both man and machine to the test, leaving him and his children battling to keep cool in the confines of their 'glasshouse' van while the machines struggle to maintain the slushies' frozen state.
Despite the challenges, Gus remains dedicated to his craft, emphasizing the importance of the hot weather for his trade. He humorously recalled his early days, standing on milk crates, serving ice cream like a miniature Artful Dodger.
